Business Transformation Relies on Leader's Engagement

23 July 2021
The third important leadership element in any change initiative is our engagement. It is important to realize that Change is the result of Our Energy x Our Focus x Our Time we put into the initiative.

Having said that, depends on the size of our organization, we might not be able to be everywhere, doing everything for everybody. In the end, we end up having to choose where we want to spend our time on. Sometimes, we might not spend it effectively. So it is important to ensure we focus our engagement on where we can generate the highest leverage for change:

  • Finding the right change agents who share our visions is the first essential action we need to do early in our engagement. A top leader from an automotive industry once commented to me, that if he could have turned back time, he would have been more resolved in ensuring he got the right people on the team as he took on the company on a turnaround effort. This is not a one size fits all. The right people come in all shapes and situations. We need to pick "the right man for the right occassion" throughout the change journey.
  • Ensuring these change agents are well equipped - coaching and equipping them with proper tools and technology are the most logical next area of our focus. Get the right external partners is also possible, if we would like to leverage on their broader experience in the subject.
  • Planning on a detailed change road map. Nothing good happens by accident. When it does, it is because the circumstances are already planned to be ready to capture it. Proper change road map that involves the as-is and to-be conditions of Process, People, and Platform comprehensively is mandatory. This road map should also have an explicit definition of success criteria for all key activities where we can monitor during the implementation.
  • Communicating - Maintaining change message is consistent, continuous, and conducted both verbally and non-verbally. Leading by example. Turning all situations to be an avenue to communicate the change 'manifesto'.
  • Monitoring execution of the change road map. We need to stay on top of issues and risks that present and work with our team to resolve and mitigate them.

These five actions will align our organization to drive toward the right vision, collaborate effectively, and begin the journey properly. As we start in motion, we will see progress. Progress breeds more confidence. Confidence breeds more energy, and in turns energy breeds more progress. But it all has to begin with the Leader.
