The Difference Between Knowing and Doing

22 June 2021

Sensei Ritsuo Shingo (the son of Shigeo Shingo, a renowned productivity management guru, with more than 40 years of experience) once said that knowing terms like SMED and quick changeover is fine, and everybody knows that quick changeover is better. But he sees that implementation is weak: There are only few people who actually do it. Everybody listens, but there is a gap in how to implement the knowledge. Imagine everybody has big brains, but no hands, no legs, nothing. You tell them, "You should do it", but everyone says "No, I have a brain".

Action. This is the underlying principle of Tenjin Productivity Partners when we set it up. While we continuously strive to add our knowledge in the latest and greatest management theory of performance and productivity improvement, we want to add direct value to our clients, by driving actual positive change in their organization. Through actions, there is no other way, there is no shortcuts.

The same principle also applies when we create Alerta Job Management. It all started in observing that there are many issues on the production floor that are not resolved in a timely manner. Sometimes, they become a larger, harder problems to handle because of this delay. Analyzing this observation deeper, we find out that currently people do not report problems in a systematic, streamlined way. In addition, available data requires time to compile and be presented as a meaningful insights. Not to mention the manual nature of task management that is currently the common practice in any industry.

The solution is to have an easy-to-use and easy-to-see management system at our fingertips. We know operations management, process improvement, data analysis, and we believe that infusing our knowledge into a mobile app to solve this problem is a logical path to take,  along with a strong back-end 'control tower' system. So, we decide to jump into it and do it. No discussion on agile and scrum theories, no Porter Five Forces competitive theory, no talk. Just do it.

We are hoping Alerta Job Management will successfully promote organizations to start shifting their attention into doing, instead of just knowing. We believe it will.
